As usual, I'm posting my monthly reviews of books I've read. As you can see, I read some of everything. This month ranges from serious stuff to a couple of guilty pleasures. Serious first:
Achilles in Vietnam by Jonathan Shay, M.D.
I read this long ago but picked it up again. With the recent mass killing in Afganistan it seemed appropriate to re-read it. Jonathan Shay is a psychiatrist who works with post traumatic stress disorder in veterans. He uses the Iliad as a metaphor for the war in Vietnam and traces what happens to soldiers there and in Troy. Fascinating.
Odysseus in America by Jonathan Shay, M.D.
His follow-up book discusses the problems of traumatized veterans when they return home. Again, he uses Homer to show a parallel between long ago Greece and today.
And now for the guilty--creepy--pleasures:
Heart Sick by Chelsea Cain Unlikely pair--a police detective and a female serial killer. What could be creepier? A fun read.
Sweetheart by Chelsea Cain. Book 2 in this addictive series. Why do they all have "heart" in the titles? Because that's the serial killer's signature.
Oh what fun this was to read. I am going to have to check out Cain... I love a good mystery!
