I wonder what was his story of why did he commit the crime. But I guess you're right it doesn't matter now, he's gone. The officer could have shoot him in the legs or arms instead but we never know. I don't think he deserved to die, but what happened in the heat of the moment was not a sentencing in the court of law -- it was a real-world attack, and the officer seems to have responded as he or she was trained.
