Best of the Best

Brazos Towers at Bayou Manor

Today the Houston Chronicle listed Best of the Best in all kinds of categories from restaurants to hospitals, from plumbers to lawyers and, of course, to retirement communities.  Brazos Towers was #1 among retirement communities.

In 2012 I received an invitation to have lunch at Brazos Towers.  An omen, I thought. Time to think about leaving my house with all the responsibilities that go with home owning and move on.  After the lunch at Brazos Towers I visited other senior residences and had a lot of free lunches.  Brazos Towers was perfect for me, I decided--in my neighborhood with a new building which wasn't opening until 2015 so I would have plenty of time to get used to the idea.  And after the Memorial Day flood of 2015 I knew I'd made the right decision.

I am so lucky to have moved here.  Friendly people, dedicated staff, lots of activities.  During this lockdown time, it's nice to
have people around even though it's sometimes hard to recognize fellow residents now that we're all masked.  And the staff here is doing their best to keep us happy with afternoon snacks brought to our apartments, exercise classes, concerts and lectures, movies and sing-alongs.  Sadly we don't have Bingo but we hear it's coming back soon.

So, do you have any choices for the best restaurant, cleaner, electrician, seasonal event, happy hour, exterminator, carpet cleaner, supermarket or anything else?  If so, leave a comment.

quotes for the week--about cats

A dog is man's best friend.  A cat is a cat's best friend.
Robert J. Vogel

A dog accepts you as the boss.  A cat wants to see your resume.
Unknown

You cannot expect everything even from the friendliest cat.
It is still a cat.
Cleveland Amory

I gave my cat a bath the other day;
they love it.  He enjoyed it, it was fun for me.
The fur would stick to my tongue, but other than that...
Steve Martin

My husband said it was him or the cat...
I miss him sometimes.

Coronavirus Haikus Part 2

My hair's going gray.
Looking in the mirror
I see my mother.

Is this the first wave
Or is it the second wave?
Whatever...still home.

Play Mah Jongg on line
Or play Scrabble with my friend.
Keep sane while shut down.

Connection to the world.
What would we do without Zoom,
Our COVID savior?

Who is that masked man?
Is he a dangerous guy?
Oh, it's my neighbor.

Missed the bluebonnets,
Missed the azaleas.
Spring has passed me by.

quotes from Painfully British Haikus

At the cinema
Eating starch in the darkness,
Carpet sticks to feet.

"Nice weather for duck!"
Probably said many times
On the Titanic.

Foreign hotel room.
Your adaptor lies dormant.
Why such a big plug?

Every houseplant
Suffers a slow painful death.
I am a monster.

The kitchem drawer
Blocked by a big spatula.
Unfairness defined.

Back home for Christmas.
By the 26th you think,
"Who are these people?"

Wardrobe malfunction.
Washing machine must be broke.
Jeans are noq too snug.

Twenty-five minutes
For pizza delivery?
Can that be legal?

Keys left in the lock,
A gas bill found in the fridge.
Age is a prankster.

Parallel parking,
I've never felt more alive
As it's done in one.

"I'm me!" you bellow
As your computer denies
You even exist.

They have moved the plums.
Supermarket trip sullied
Fruitless aisle search starts.

Books of May

Spent most of May watching shows on Amazon Prime so I didn't read as much as usual.  I'm catching up in June.

Hidden Valley Road is a nonfiction book, currently on the best seller list, about a family with twelve children, six of whom had/have schizophrenia.  Also includes the history of various views/treatments of schizophrenia.  Very interesting,

Nearing Ninety is Judith Viorst's latest "decade" book.  Yes, she's older than I am.  As usual, this book is spot on, even if you're far from 90.

The Grammarians.  Story of twin girls who are very interested in words.  Probably should be titled The Semanticists.

quotes about June

Spring being a tough act to follow, God created June,
                                            A. Bernstein

If a June night could talk, it would probablyboast it invented romance.
                                            Bernard Williams

I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where it was always June.
                                          L.M. Montgomery

It was June and the world smelled of roses.  The sunshine was like powdered gold over the grassy hillside.
                                         Maud Hart Lovelace
