My Ongoing Battle with Technology

I have learned a new word: dystechnia. I don’t know if it’s a real word, but it should be. In fact, it’s a synonym for me.

Technology is beyond me, plus it keeps changing. As soon as I learn something, it’s out of date. My granddaughter said, “Nana, nobody uses e-mail any more; it’s too slow.” Ow, that hurt. “What do they use?” I asked. “Skype.” I didn’t have the courage to ask, “What is Skype?” Anyway, I think I sort of know—something like a telephone connection with pictures. Or maybe not.

I have a confession to make. I use my cell phone…to make phone calls. I don’t text, I don’t take pictures. I don’t have an IPhone with all the neat little apps or an IPad either. I don’t require instant info. I figure I can get the weather by looking out the window, and I can wait for other stats and stuff until I get home. I don’t feel a need for a constant connection to Everywhere.

I don't use Twitter. I can't imagine anyone wanting to know my whereabouts or my random thoughts in 140 characters. Besides, isn't tweeting for birds, not people?

I do have a GPS, which I don’t always trust, and my kids gave me a kindle for my birthday, so I’ve made some strides, but I have a long way to go. I doubt I’ll ever get there, wherever “there” is.

I sooooo relate to this post. My husband Rod used to call me his little luddite.
I believe a little man lives inside my computer and his aim in life is to tick me off.

I love your look, I love your sound and I while I call myself a 'technodinosuar' I like your term dystenchic much better. Here's to coining it a real word!

Are your granddaughter's skills for hire? My kids are in college and can't seem to find the time to help their 'dinomom'.

Loved you post, I hope you visit mine (again).

All the best,

LOL! I barely even use my phone to make calls; it's an expensive alarm clock that occasionally rings because someone I know requires information that only I have. :) I don't Kindle OR Skype (although I do tweet).

Technology was not meant for some personality types, and I have one of those.

It sounds like you are doing better than most in your assimilation of new technology. Plenty of people haven't even worked out how to get 'on the internet' yet, or what to do once they're there.

I agree with you, that it's actually healthy to be out of touch and uncontactable once in a while. Who has cringed at seeing a happy family sitting down to a picnic lunch in a park somewhere, before everything is interrupted when a mobile phone rings and one of the parents has to answer it...

I'm a fellow crusader and new follower.

I like this post. It reminds me of when I tried to get my mom to email me so I could save money on phone bills. She tried, but then she would send and email and call me to tell me she sent me an email. Love her.

If you have a Kindle you are doing better than me. ;)

Although I am a techy person, I have yet to embrace using mobile phones as anything more than phones :)
