B is for Brenham, Texas, Home of Bluebonnets, Burgers and Blue Bell Ice Cream

Ever heard of Brenham, Texas?  Probably not.  It's a little town on Highway 290 between Houston and Austin.  But it has three things in its favor:  bluebonnets, burgers and Blue Bell Ice Cream.

In the spring it's one of the best places along the Central Texas/Hill Country Bluebonnet Trail.  Fields full of bluebonnets dot the highways and you can be sure to see families taking pictures of their kids frolicking among the Texas state flowers.  You're not supposed to pick them--or maybe that's a folk tale.  I always do and I've never been arrested yet.

This will surprise you, but some of the best burgers in Texas are to be had at the Brenham airport cafe.  You don't believe it?  Neither did I, although I'd heard for years that people flew their small planes into Brenham (no major airport there, of course) just to eat at that cafe.  So last year on a trip back from Austin, my friend and I ate lunch there. It's like a trip back in time. See the waitresses in their saddle oxfords and poodle skirts.  There's a huge 'jukebox that plays 50's tunes and yes, planes fly in every few minutes or so And no wonder.  The hamburgers are amazing.  One of the most fun  lunches I've had in years.

Another reason to visit Brenham is the Blue Bell Creamery.  There's no better ice cream in the world.    Everything from Homemade Vanilla to special flavors on holidays.  You can tour the creamery and have a treat in the cafe/gift shop.

All in all, Brenham is worth the trip.

Wow. I haven't seen that many Bluebonnets since I passed through Texas one Spring on my way to California. I love refreshing that memory with your post.
Someday, I may just pop in for a hamburger, and visit the Blue Bell Ice Cream creamery. Great post for B.
I'm a fellow A-Z Challenger. Have a great day.

We used to live in Austin, and I'll admit (especially this time of year) I miss the bluebonnets. I like Blue Bell ice cream too, although it wasn't my favorite it was tasty. No ice cream is bad ice cream. :)
As far as burgers, Texas has the best burgers anywhere: Whataburger. I seriously would give my left arm to have one right now. Yum!

I have never had an airport cafe on my 'to do' list...until now!! Great post and introduction to a location I had not heard of until now.

I love the lettering you used for the letter B. It suits your blog. Too bad you didn't have a close up picture of the women in their poodle skirts.

Just the name, Blue Bell Creamery, makes me want a bowl of ice-cream. It sounds heavenly! I'll take a bowl of Century Sundae if you please.

The flowers look lovely, but it is the ice cream that would get me there :)
